Beyond the horizon

Background

Richard Parks is a former Wales international rugby player turned extreme environment athlete. In May 2009, he was forced to retire from rugby due to a shoulder injury, after a professional career which spanned 13 years.

Following his retirement and driven by the mantra ‘‘the horizon is only the limit of our sight’’, Parks embarked on an expedition he dubbed the 737 Challenge; encompassing summiting the highest mountain on each of the world’s 7 continents and reaching all 3 poles (The North Pole, The South Pole and the summit of Everest), within a staggering and record-breaking 7 months.

Limegreentangerine are proud to support Richard’s projects, the most recent being Project Everest.

737 Challenge

Limegreentangerine were Richard’s design partners on the challenge, designing the logo, website, emails and a plethora of collateral, and we have continued to support Richard on subsequent and ongoing projects, notably creating his personal umbrella ‘RP’ monogram brand identity.

For 737 we began by creating a visual identity. 7 ‘hidden’ peaks in the ‘challenge’ type coupled with the graphic ‘horizon’ in the logo marry with breathtaking panoramic imagery amplify the daunting prospect of the enormity of this gripping adventure. The stunning monotoned photography captured the isolated, hostile environments Richard faced.

The 737 website became the epicentre of marketing activities evolving over the course of the challenge – before, during and after. We shared Richard’s progress daily during the Challenge, encouraging followers to buy into the experience. Visitors could view his course on a specially created linear map, keep up-to-date with his daily diary, plus view latest images, video and audio from each leg as they were sent back.

The Challenge raised over £320,000 for Mary Curie Cancer Care, with an additional media exposure valued at over £3m. Our work with Richard as part of the marketing team was recognised winning a Cardiff Design Festival, Canmol: Wales Marketing and CiM National Awards.

New horizons

On 12 July 2011 he reached the final summit, Russia’s Mount Elbrus, completing his remarkable feat in a record setting 6 months, 11 days, 7 hours and 53 minutes, and so setting a new benchmark in the climbing of the 7 summits. The challenge raised hundreds of thousands of pounds in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. A documentary of the adventure aired on BBC Wales later that year.

The following year, he attempted to ski solo unsupported and unassisted to the South Pole from Hercules Inlet on the Antarctic coast. Covering 1,150km (715 miles) he achieved it in 29 days, 19 hours and 24 minutes – setting a British record.

In 2016, as an Ambassador for Welsh Government’s Year of Adventure, Richard announced his next extreme adventure. Project Everest will combine endurance with exploration and science. by attempting to summit Everest without any supplementary oxygen where he will take a blood sample. The unique data harvested, it is hoped, will provide crucial information towards dementia research.

As seen on…

Parks’ 737 Challenge was filmed for a three-part BBC documentary; which has since been distributed across the globe, capturing the highs and lows of a relentless, emotional and awe-inspiring epic.

In 2014, Richard’s first network television series was broadcast on Channel 5. The series followed his year of preparation and endurance races including Nepal’s Yak Attack and the brutal Jungle Ultra – a marathon through the Amazon, culminating in his solo, unsupported and unassisted record-breaking journey to the South Pole. Richard’s book, ‘Beyond the Horizon’, with its jacket designed by Limegreentangerine, was published by Little Brown later that year.

Since our first meeting, Limegreentangerine have been a vital cog in my 737 Challenge. As part of my project plan, and team, the marketing material designed by LGT has been hugely powerful in securing sponsorship through the strength of my brand. Promoting my 737 Challenge through various PR initiatives using LGT’s creative design, engaging and informing worldwide followers through my website has been vital in the charitable arm of the project, raising funds in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

I'm very proud of, and grateful for, my ongoing relationship with the LGT team as we plan exciting future projects. It’s been awesome to work with such passionate, professional and talented guys… I’m part of the furniture there now! Richard Parks
