A new national access scheme

Background

Hynt is a new national access scheme that promotes Welsh theatre and arts centre productions to visitors with an impairment or specific access requirement and their carers. It’s also a resource for anyone needing specific access information when planning a trip to the theatre. If you have an impairment, a specific access requirement or care for someone that does, Hynt applies to you.

Existing schemes run independently by venues were fragmented and inconsistent. The Hynt scheme aims to consolidate those schemes and deliver a single, clear experience. Led by the Arts Council of Wales initiative managed by Creu Cymru in partnership with Diverse Cymru, Limegreentangerine were appointed to help realise the scheme from naming through to the delivery of a highly accessible web presence.

Passage

Art and culture should be open to everyone. But if you have an impairment or a specific access requirement, getting to experience it isn’t always easy. Often, visiting a theatre or an arts centre can be more complicated than just booking tickets and choosing what to wear.

The name Hynt, Welsh for ‘passage’, was chosen for its brevity and memorability, the suggestion being of card holders breaking through invisible barriers, through confidence in freedom, and right of access. A clear visual identity was developed that could be easily identifiable for the audience, be it through colour, shape or name. The identity implies ‘go’, simply constructed with a yellow triangle encapsulating open, legible typeset in black.

The project delivered naming, identity, web design and brand guidelines.

Accessibility online

As the site is aimed at a target audience with varied abilities, we worked with an accessibility user group from the initial development stages. The site has been built with screen readers in mind and works across all platforms and devices so it is as inclusive as the venues featured on the site. During testing with the UCAN accessibility user group, we scored 9/10 in layout – the highest they have ever scored a website. A clean simple design allowed for easy navigation large buttons and text to allow for visual impairments.

The website also serves a purpose for the venues themselves and perspective members. Allowing users to fill in and apply for the membership online. Behind the scenes, there is also a bespoke venue area with a marketing and communications toolkit. Therefore, each venue has its own private access where they can edit and manage their events listings manually or automatically using an API that was specifically developed.
