Gower Brewery

Ales of outstanding natural beauty

Background

Brewed in the heart of the Gower Peninsula in Swansea, Gower Brewery was an idea hatched by three friends, two of whom are publicans, towards the end of 2011. By the following Spring they had invested in brewery equipment and approached Limegreentangerine to help them position, brand and package their product.

Since then their growth has been staggering; recently noted in both The Telegraph and Waitrose Good Food guides, just in the last 12 months they have sold over 700,000 pints across five countries and are on course to achieve a £million revenue in the next two years.

How we helped

Identifying where they best felt their ales were placed within the market, two routes were presented; a paired-back ultra-modern route and a more traditional, heritage option. Unanimously, the latter resonated.

The Gower is their primary differentiator, so we created an identity built around a postcardesque illustration of the picturesque Three Cliffs Bay, acting as a window to the Gower itself. The brand would ultimately become a postcard and a souvenir.

Reinforcing this was the tagline ‘Ales of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, a play on Gower beaches being awarded green flag status, tying the approach and the product together. This, along with a small byline on the bottle’s reverse label, ‘best enjoyed with a good view’ brought the message home.

We then set about creating a distinct pump clip and label shape that had bar and fridge presence – distinct and memorable – three subtle arcs at the top echoing the Three Cliffs found in the logo.

The brand was launched as a range of six products; Gower Gold, Lighthouse, Gower Power, Sampson’s Jack, Best Bitter and Black Diamond, with other guest ales following.

In their first twelve months, Gower Brewery sold to over 50 regional outlets delivering in excess of 150 cases of bottles per week and growing rapidly. To this day, that’s over 30,000 bottles sold. They’ve gone on to claim numerous awards and accolades including Startup of the Year at the 2012 National Countryside Alliance Awards, as well as scooping the prestigious Beer Mat of the Year award by the British Beermat Collectors’ Society. Lighthouse lager was published in the 2013 book Boutique Beer: 500 of the World’s Finest Craft Brews by Ben McFarland (available on Amazon).

In September 2013, Gower Gold triumphed in the Sainsbury's Great British Beer Hunt and was stocked in supermarkets and pubs nationwide. In 2015, Gower sold three-quarters of a million pints.

The reaction to the design has been excellent. Exactly what we were looking for. One of Wales’s largest breweries and even the First Minister have commented how much they like the packaging – the reaction from customers has been universal; everyone has remarked on the established feel and striking shelf presence the labels possess – they jump out of the fridge! Our brand and packaging is instantly recognisable, and the growing sales figures back this up. Matt Joslin, Co-founder
