Laughing at the locals

Background

A Cardiff summer staple since 2009, the Cardiff Comedy Festival has presented not only the best in local talent but also the likes of Rhod Gilbert, Ardal O’Hanlon, Lucy Porter, Richard Herring and much, much more.

The festival absorbs a variety of stand-up shows, Edinburgh previews, specialist events, established Cardiff nights, comedy theatre, workshops, showcases, summer schools, family friendly events, film screenings and the Welsh Unsigned Stand-up Awards. The festival also promotes inclusivity through a unique partnership with the Arts Council of England’s Unlimited programme.

In 2015, a new production team of the Glee Club and Porter’s sought a refresh of the festival’s brand identity and website, with the aim of driving a wider audience to the many weird and wonderful offerings through the month.

One page of laughs

The festival takes place over four weeks, with a large number of events being held across the city. Therefore, there was a need for upcoming shows and information to be easily found, as well as a need to be able to dip in and out of the handful of venues’ event options. A single page website with a diverse and lively style ensures that listing and venue info can be absorbed in one, digestible place whilst reflecting the fun aspect of the festival.

An interactive map shows the different venues across Cardiff, with further information about the venues available on click. The ‘must see’ shows are highlighted in a featured list at the top of the page, whilst the full listings are broken down into weekly chunks. An additional filter allows users to search by venue, date and/or act.

Optimised for mobile and designed with tablet browsing in mind, the show and venue information is displayed in tidy and contained pop-up boxes. The site provides the public with easily digestible viewing on the move... a prime example of how a one-page, responsive website should be.

Putting the cherry on top of the cake, our set of stylised icons offer a contrast against the bold show photography, whilst the use of quirky web animations on elements throughout the site give the brand depth and a splash of personality.
